Mike Smith, President
Michael J. Smith, president of M.J. Smith Builders, Inc., brings to the custom residential housing
field over 30 years of professional building and construction experience.
Mike was brought to the
Orlando area to manage the construction of the Portofino Bay Hotel at Universal Studios.
He has also decided to return to his roots in the construction business and in 2001 opened his own firm.
Mike began his career in 1971 as an apprentice cabinetmaker in Springhouse, PA, servicing custom
homes, becoming a Journeyman in 1976. Relocating to Burlington, Vermont, where he became a
superintendent for Erickson Construction, a custom home builder. While working with the Erickson
family he personally oversaw the construction of 48 custom homes and a 96 unit subdivision over a 7
year period. In 1984 Mike relocated to Boston and entered his first commercial venture as a
Project Manager.
Over the span of 17 years, his career, Mike managed many large institutional and hospital projects
in Boston and Atlanta areas, and transferred to the Orlando in the fall of 1997.
With his return to the home building industry as M.J. Smith Builders, Inc., Mike brings to the client
a penchant for strong buildings, quality and craftsmanship.
His ability to understand, communicate, and to personally oversee the building process from
start to finish is a great advantage that is brought to each client and project.
His capacity to balance the management of both the construction
and business areas of each project is extremely important to you the client.

Timeline
- May 2001 — M.J. Smith Builders, Inc. was incorporated in the
State of Florida.
- August 2001 — Project 001-01, Lot 17 at Lake Cove Pointe,
construction started on a 2378 square foot single family residence. The goal was to have it
completed and ready for the 2002 Parade of Homes, sales price in the $250,000 range.
- December 2001 — MJSB was approached by the developer of Lake
Cove Pointe to construct two spec homes. With developer financing in place, all work was done
on a fixed fee basis. Within a month, MJSB was offered two additional homes.
- January/February 2002 — Designs for the next three homes where
completed and the building permit applications were submitted.
- March 2002 — Construction began on the second and third homes
(004-01 and 005-01).
- April 2002 — Construction began on the first energy efficient
home (006-01) to be developed by MJSB. Construction was of reinforced concrete walls and
Styrofoam insulation (R value 22).
- May 2002 — Lot 17 (home 001-01) was completed prior to the
Mid-Florida Parade of Homes, and awarded 2nd place in the Under $300,000 Division. Compliments
were paid by both peers and potential buyers regarding the quality and design of the home.
The home also won an Outstanding Features Award for the Front Entry. This home is now under
agreement at $252,000.
- May 2002 — Recognition at the Parade of Homes led to a contract to
build a home for Mr. and Mrs. David Campbell on lot 33 (home 011-01) at Lake Cove ($250,000 range).
- June 2002 — Negotiations with the Campbells (home 011-02) on their home
design and budget continued.
- July 2002 — The Campbells purchased lot 33, and signed contract for
construction.
- August 2002 — Construction preparation began.
- September 2002 — Lot 3 sold (home 004-01).
- September 2002 — The Campbell’s Building Permit was issued.
- October 2002 — The Campbells’ wall foundations were completed (home 011-02).
- November 2002 — The Campbells’ frame was started.
- November 2002 — Branch/Neal asked MJSB to bid on house.
- December 2002 — The Campbells’ frame continued, MEP began.
- December 2002 — Branch/Neal job was awarded (home 013-02).
- January 2003 — The Campbells asked if we could close in 2 months (March 18).
- January 2003 — Branch/Neal contract was signed (home 013-02).
- March 2003 — The Campbells closed on the 18th (home 011-02).
- March 2003 — Lot 5 sold (home 005-01).
- April 2003 — Lot 5 closed on April 15 (home 005-01).
- May 2003 — Branch building permit was issued (home 013-02).
- June 2003 — Branch/Neal Construction began (home 013-02).
- June 2003 — Discussions with Reunion developer took place (home 019-03).
- June 2003 — Options were placed on lot 124 (home 019-03).
- June 2003 — Lot 17 sold.
